Sausages are on the menu in Kent this summer

Sausage competition could emphasise quality of cuisine on Dorset caravan holidays

The quality of cuisine on offer in a particular destination can be of great importance when it comes to choosing a spot for a caravan holiday.

With so many of Britain's regions defined by tasty grub, some may be wondering what the south coast has got to offer.

Judging by the quality of a recent competition held in the New Forest, the answer is likely to be plenty.

The national park – which spreads across Dorset and Hampshire – has revealed the results of a game it held to celebrate National Sausage Week in November.

At the time, it asked families in the region to come up with their own unique bangers that could be produced by local butchers.

It was eventually determined that one of the winners of the competition was Matthew Welch, nine, who designed the now famous cheesy chip sausage.

Chris Oakes of Oakwood Butchers in Brockenhurst set to work making the youngster's dream a reality and, this week, the foodstuff was delivered to his door.

Explaining the rationale behind his concept, Matthew said: "Cheesy chips and sausages are my favourite dinners and I thought it would be great to have them in a sausage.

Meanwhile, butcher Mr Oakes stated: "I'm passionate about producing high-quality local produce. All my Lop pigs which I rear and butcher spend their lives in the New Forest and Hurn Forest near Ringwood."

Families and couples who fancy trying out some tasty New Forest fare – including the area's signature sausages – could book a caravan holiday for 2012 and spend some time tucking in to what it has to offer.

The New Forest recently revealed its special bus tours that offer tourists the chance to see the national park from an open-top bus enjoyed a busy year in 2011, with the green line transporting some 20,000 people.
