Go back in time on New Forest caravan holiday
People who book a caravan holiday in the New Forest for the early part of 2012 could be taken back in time, with a special look at some of the objects that defined years gone by.
The national park has revealed that an archaeological excavation recently took place in Lyndhurst, where locals came together to dig up the parish churchyard.
Wessex Archaeology and the New Forest National Park Authority teamed up to carry out the work, which was intended to pave the way for a new footpath and improved road access.
However, during the course of the dig, a series of fascinating finds were made and progress is now documented in a special display in the church.
Photographs showing the hill the church is built on and its past, as well as signs of medieval activities in Lyndhurst, are among the exhibition.
Those with a particular interest in the subject could schedule a trip to the south coast to coincide with a presentation due to be delivered by archaeologist Phil Andrews on February 10th.
Among the items discovered during the excavation were several headstones dating back to the medieval era and four burial vaults.
New Forest National Park Authority archaeologist Frank Green said: "We didn’t expect to find the remains of the early church as it is most likely below the present building.
"However there were over 350 shards of pottery found – jars and rims of jugs - and nearly a quarter were medieval. We also found stone roofing slates which were frequently used on medieval sites."
Andrew Bateman, tourism manager at Hampshire County Council, recently identified Hampshire as a county with plenty to offer in 2012.
He said there is a plethora of events to choose from in the region this year, from the Dickens 2012 Festival in Portsmouth to Snowdrop Day at Chawton House Library.
