A stay in rural Sussex is a great way to spend time in 2012

Football, swimming and rugby could be features of caravan holidays for kids

Mums and dads planning a caravan holiday for their kids at this time of the year may be wondering exactly how to entertain the youngsters once they arrive at their park of choice.

They have been given some good ideas by BT Coaching for Life, which sponsored research that has uncovered the most sociable activities available to little ones.

Top of the list – with 59 per cent of participants boasting at least 17 friends – is football, followed by swimming (56 per cent) and rugby (20 per cent).

All of these activities – and many more – could be available to those who choose their caravan holiday destination wisely and ensure it has plenty of sports facilities nearby.

Other pursuits that completed BT's top ten were ballet/dance, athletics, netball, martial arts, tennis, cricket and gymnastics.

Three-quarters of the mums and dads who took part in the survey said they have children who they would describe as active and sporty, perhaps giving an indicator of what they would most enjoy should they take them on a break in the UK.

Julie Hindley, BT Community Investment Manager, said sport can play a "really beneficial" part in the development of a child.

"Whether your child belongs to every club going or just enjoys playing with friends in the park, it's important they get plenty of physical activity. Sports don't just have to be restricted to school or after school clubs. Parents need to make the most of their weekends and get involved with sports with their kids."

One obvious way of taking the expert's advice is to book a sports-themed caravan holiday on the south coast of England.

More relaxed tourists might be interested in a trip to Hart in Hampshire, which was recently named as the UK's top place to be in terms of standard of living by the Halifax Quality of Life Survey.
