Domestic holidays in the UK are on the up

Are caravan holidays in Dorset boosting UK economy?

Caravan holidays in Dorset, Devon and other parts of the south coast could be playing an increasingly significant role in propping up the UK economy.

The Bank of England has revealed that spending on foreign breaks has gone down since 2007, with more people being priced out of Spain, Italy or Greece.

Instead, it looks likely that domestic vacations have risen in popularity, with the budget-friendly and fun-packed holiday parks of Britain hosting many travellers.

A sharp fall in purchasing power has impacted Britons in many ways, none more so than forcing many to re-evaluate their holiday plans.

"As a result, they may have chosen to spend more on domestic tourism ... the staycation effect," the bank is quoted as stating by the Daily Telegraph.

When doing so, it is important to search for a destination that will offer plenty in the way of culture, interest, history and fun.

Some of England's south coast counties undoubtedly tick these boxes, with Devon and Dorset providing rural beauty and relaxing scenery, while Sussex boasts the modern and vibrant city of Brighton and Suffolk is renowned for its unspoilt beaches.

Britain's overall trade is set to grow by 1.2 per cent this year, with a 0.3 per cent hike predicted next year, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.

It is not clear how much of the country's economic success can be put down to caravan holidays and other domestic breaks, but a continuation of the global economic meltdown could see demand for such trips remain strong.

Britons were given an incentive to book a spring break recently by the Ramblers, which announced a series of special walks to mark the season in the UK.

Locations such as the Isle of Wight, Epping Forest in Essex and the south Cornwall coast will be explored on foot by tourists and walking fans in March.
