The south is packed with walking hotspots

South coast 'is a British walking highlight'

Walkers have been advised that they will find plenty to excite them should they book a caravan holiday on the south coast of England.

Maria Castellina, a spokeswoman for the Ramblers, has identified several of the country's top spots for putting one foot in front of the other and taking in magnificent scenery while benefiting from physical exercise.

She started by recommending there are points across the nation with great walking facilities, suggesting there are many "fabulous places" waiting to be enjoyed.

But when asked to be more specific, she said it is the south coast that shines through as the most special destination of all.

"There are some places that particularly shine in winter time. Try heading to the seaside in Cornwall or Sussex for exhilarating coastal walks without the crowds," Ms Castellina stated.

The expert went on to note there are plenty of places in the UK that are just right for people who are not used to hiking or completing long-distance routes and would like something a little simpler to set them on their way.

"When you're starting out walking it's best to start with shorter, flat walks on even terrain. Walks around lakes, through flat country parks, along the coast or exploring cities are often good places to start," she explained.

Alternatively, the architecture of London ensures the capital is the perfect place for anybody looking to enjoy some urban walking.

Ms Castellina said its buildings are sure to be seen as "delights" by everybody who visits.

The UK is a great country to go walking in, particularly if the results of a recent survey by Lonely Planet are taken into consideration.

More people suggested the nation's landscape, scenery and heritage – all of which are available to hikers – are the most important feature of it than backed any other option.
