Edward Burra exhibition delights Chichester art fans

Located in central Chichester, the Pallant House Gallery is the location of a landmark exhibition by renowned British artist Edward Burra. Running until 19 February and promoted as the first major display of the painter’s work for over 25 years, the retrospective is a wide-ranging collection of about 70 of Burra’s most treasured pieces that led to him being elected as a member of the Royal Academy and granted a CBE.

Best known for his vivid and sometimes disturbing portrayals of life in 1930s Harlem and vibrant representations of jazz music, the eccentric talent is much respected within both surrealist and mainstream art circles. Burra was once the subject of an exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London, and it will be easy for those visiting Chichester this month to see why.
