Britain's landscape is loved by many people

Caravan holidays can bring Britons closer to much-loved landscape

There are many advantages to taking a caravan holiday in Britain in 2012 rather than a foreign break, from the budget-friendly nature of domestic trips to the potential to explore some of the UK's most beautiful regions.

When choosing a destination, it may be shrewd to consider spots with some of the country's most iconic sights, settings or scenery close by.

Lonely Planet has released the results of a new survey that show it is the landscape and heritage of the UK that is the favourite aspect of the nation for many people.

When asked for their top British feature, more respondents picked the beautiful scenery than any other option.

And renewed faith in holidays at home could be particularly strong in 2012, as a series of events are planned that are sure to show the country in the best possible light.

David Else, author of the organisation's Great Britain guide, said: "It is not surprising that pride in Britain is on a high. 2012 is going to be a great year across the country. The Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics will make 2012 a particularly exciting year to be British, riding on the buzz of the Royal wedding last year."

A quarter of all Britons are expected to book a break in the UK over the next year, with locations such as Devon, Cornwall and the South Downs sure to be popular choices.

Stunning coastline and countryside were picked out by members of the public as the feature to be proudest of, while history and culture are also said to be in rich supply.

Laura Smith, destination public relations manager at VisitEngland, recently said holidays in the UK can still be great fun even in the winter, as the country has plenty of indoors entertainment and attractions to offer tourists.
