Caravan holidays can bring people closer to wildlife at local zoos

Visit Devon to see crocodiles at eco-friendly zoo

A trip to Devon – perhaps for a fun-packed caravan holiday – is not complete without visiting Paignton Zoo, where crocodiles are among the fabulous creatures on offer.

Families in particular could make a day out at the zoo a priority during their stay, with the animals and adventure facilities sure to excite all youngsters.

Those with a passion for the environment could be interested in other aspects of the zoo's operation, such as its reliance on a new eco-friendly way of caring for the crocodiles.

South Devon Biomass Company – which is a part of Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust – has confirmed it is providing the attraction with wood chips that can be burnt in a special green boiler that is used to warm up the reptiles, reported the Western Morning News.

"Wood chip when harvested from a sustainable source is considered a low-carbon fuel which can help an organisation lower its CO2 emissions by reducing the use of fossil fuels," explained the zoo's environmental officer Peter Morgan.

It may please those who take a trip to the wildlife complex to know their enjoyment does not come at an overly-excessive cost to the environment.

Although the crocodiles are a huge draw for excited kids and adults, Paignton Zoo is home to many more animals that can provide just as much fun.

For example, why not take the time to explore the elephant and rhinoceros enclosures, for an authentic taste of the African savannah?

Alternatively, reptile fans could stick to what they love by taking a closer look at the pythons on show in Devon.

Paignton Zoo was opened by millionaire Herbert Whitley in 1923 and included exotic creatures such as zebras, bison and baboons from its very first day.

Today, the attraction is also proud of its education and charity work and aims to conserve wildlife from around the world.
