Holidaying at home saves even more cash as UK ranks among the cheapest countries in Europe
According to a recent 2009 study conducted by Eurostat - the statistical office of the European Union, the price level of a comparable basket of food and non-alcoholic beverages was more than twice as high in the most expensive EU state than in the cheapest one - with the UK ranked cheaper in pricing than many of our neighbouring European countries.
37 Countries participated in the survey covering around 500 different products.
Countries in the EU such as Ireland, France, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Austria and Luxembourg were between 10% and 40% above the EU average for these items while the United Kingdom (along with others such as Sweden, Portugal and Slovenia) were up to 10% below the average.
The highest levels for Alcohol prices were seen in Sweden, Ireland, Denmark and Finland so don't head for these locations for a bargain pint/half litre of beer. Ireland actually came out quite badly in the survey overall in terms of expense also ranking the highest for tobacco prices in the entire EU!
It proves the real value of the Staycation is much more than just saving on travel costs and hassle - spending your money here in the UK will generally get you much further than with many of our European counterparts.
